Our Story

It began around a Mahjong table.

Moira began with a summer spent around an American Mahjong table — and with a simple curiosity about why the game could bring people together so naturally.

Where It Began

A summer in the United States changed the way we saw Mahjong.

During a summer program in the United States, our founder was introduced to a weekly American Mahjong club by her host family. At first, the ritual felt unfamiliar. Mahjong had always been something she associated with older family members gathering during holidays back in China.

But week after week, the table began to feel different. Women of different ages, professions, and backgrounds gathered to play, talk, laugh, and spend time together. Each Mahjong set had its own personality, and every gathering felt personal in its own way.

Could the things surrounding Mahjong feel just as thoughtful as the game itself?

What We Learned

Beautiful design was only the beginning.

The deeper we looked, the clearer it became that a good Mahjong product has to work for the people who actually use it.

01 / Real Play

Design has to work at the table

A set can look beautiful and still miss the details that matter during real play. Readability, handling, storage, setup, and the way every component works together all shape the experience.

02 / Real Routines

Mahjong lives beyond the game itself

Players carry sets to friends' homes, instructors bring materials to lessons, hosts prepare weekly games, and groups develop rituals of their own. Those routines matter to the products we create.

03 / Real Feedback

The best ideas improve through use

We share early ideas, listen when something does not work as expected, and refine the details based on how people actually play — not only on how a product looks in a design file.

How We Work

We listen first. Then we design.

Moira grows through direct conversation with players, instructors, and Mahjong communities across the United States. We share early ideas, ask questions, collect criticism, test prototypes, and pay attention to the small details that only become obvious during real use.

When reality does not match an early assumption, we change the product. That feedback becomes part of the next sample, the next adjustment, and eventually the final piece that reaches the table.

Test Turn ideas into prototypes and see how they work in real use.
Refine Improve the details when feedback reveals a better way forward.

From Feedback to Product

Ideas travel from the table back to Shenzhen.

Our team in Shenzhen turns what we learn into physical products quickly and thoughtfully. Close collaboration between design, sampling, production, and real player feedback allows us to keep improving instead of treating the first idea as the final answer.

01

Player-informed design

We look at how people actually learn, carry, store, host, teach, and play — then use those observations to shape the product.

02

Fast, thoughtful development

Feedback is brought back to our team, translated into samples, tested again, and refined through an ongoing product-development process.

03

Crafted for everyday use

We want every product to feel considered in both appearance and function — beautiful enough to keep out, practical enough to keep using.

Rooted in Respect

Respect the roots. Design for the way people play today.

Mahjong carries deep cultural roots and a history that has traveled across generations and borders. Moira is not here to replace that history or present ourselves as the final answer to what Mahjong should become.

We want to learn from the people who play it today while respecting where the game came from — creating products that feel natural in modern American Mahjong without disconnecting them from the culture behind the game.

01
Respect Mahjong's cultural roots and history.
02
Learn from the people who play and teach the game today.
03
Keep design connected to real use, not decoration alone.
04
Continue listening, testing, and evolving.
