American Mahjong Tile Size Guide: How to Choose

American Mahjong tile size affects more than appearance. Face dimensions influence readability and table space, while thickness changes how a tile feels in the hand, stands on its own, fits a rack, and packs into a case. The best size is the one that works with your vision, hands, table, accessories, and playing routine.

This guide shows you how to compare measurements without assuming that one format is universally “standard.” If you are comparing the rest of a set as well, start with our American Mahjong set buying guide.

Quick answer

Compare all three measurements. Height and width determine the visible face; thickness affects stability, grip, rack compatibility, and packed space. Always compare the seller’s stated dimensions with the actual rack or case you plan to use.

How American Mahjong Tile Dimensions Are Written

Retailers do not always list dimensions in the same order. One listing may use height × width × thickness, while another begins with width. Before comparing two sets, identify which measurement describes the long face edge, the short face edge, and the depth.

FaceHeight

The longer visible edge when the tile is upright.

FaceWidth

The shorter visible edge and the space each tile occupies across a rack.

DepthThickness

The distance from front to back, which influences grip and stability.

A difference of only a few millimeters can be noticeable across a 13- or 14-tile hand. Compare the complete dimensions rather than judging size from a close-up photograph.

Two Tile Formats in the Current Moira Collection

Moira currently uses two formats across its active American Mahjong sets. The figures below are normalized as face height × face width × thickness so the proportions are easier to compare.

Tile dimensions in current Moira American Mahjong sets
Collection Face height × width Thickness Format notes
Classic Fairway and Ladies Fairway 35 × 25 mm 11 mm A slightly taller, wider face with a slimmer profile.
Capri Garden, Garden Muse and Pink Shores 32 × 22 mm 15 mm A slightly more compact face with a deeper profile.

The Golf dimensions are 35 × 25 × 11 mm (about 1.38 × 0.98 × 0.43 in). The Capri Garden, Garden Muse, and Pink Shores dimensions are 22 × 32 × 15 mm as listed on their product pages (about 0.87 × 1.25 × 0.60 in). Reordering the first two figures in the table above does not change the product; it simply presents both face measurements as height × width.

Compare the Classic Fairway set, Ladies Fairway set, Capri Garden, Garden Muse, and Pink Shores to see how those proportions work with different artwork.

1. Choose for Readability, Not Size Alone

A larger face gives the artwork and indices more room, but size does not guarantee clarity. Contrast, type size, symbol shape, glare, and the distinction among Dots, Bams, Craks, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers all matter.

  • Inspect straight-on photos of the actual tile faces.
  • Confirm that suit names, numbers, and Wind letters remain clear at normal table distance.
  • Check the White Dragon, Flowers, and Jokers so they cannot be confused with blank spares.
  • Look at angled photos for reflections if the tiles have a glossy finish.

If the symbols themselves are unfamiliar, use our visual guide to American Mahjong tiles before comparing decorative styles.

2. Think About Grip and Standing Stability

Thickness affects how much material your fingers can hold when shuffling, drawing, and returning a tile to the rack. A deeper tile can feel substantial and may stand readily on its own. A slimmer tile can reduce the front-to-back footprint and may feel lighter or more streamlined, depending on the material and construction.

Those are tendencies, not quality rankings. Edge finish, weight distribution, surface texture, and the relationship between face height and base depth also influence handling. If dexterity is a concern, compare a tile’s actual dimensions and weight rather than relying on labels such as “large” or “standard.”

3. Check Rack and Pusher Compatibility

American Mahjong is often played with racks, but rack channels and ledges vary. A tile can be comfortable in the hand yet sit too shallowly, lean, or crowd the neighboring tiles in a particular rack.

Before mixing brands, measure the usable rack ledge and compare it with the tile’s thickness and face height. Then estimate the width of a full hand. Fourteen 25 mm-wide tiles placed edge to edge occupy about 350 mm before any spacing; fourteen 22 mm-wide tiles occupy about 308 mm. Real arrangements can be wider because players leave small gaps or separate groups.

Pushers do not hold the tiles, so their most important dimension is length. Moira’s tile pushers are 20 inches long and sold as a set of four; racks, tiles, and a mat are not included.

4. Match the Tiles to Your Table

Larger faces or wider hands use more horizontal room, while greater thickness uses more depth in the wall. On a compact dining table, a few millimeters multiplied across four walls can matter. Also allow space for the annual card, discards, exposures, drinks, and any table accessories.

If space is limited, mark out the approximate wall and rack dimensions with paper before purchasing. This simple test is more reliable than comparing photographs taken with different lenses and camera distances.

5. Plan Storage and Travel Around the Exact Set

Tile count and tile size work together. A 160-tile retail set may include a common 152-tile playing inventory plus brand-specific extras. Even when two sets contain the same number of tiles, different thicknesses can require different trays or compartments.

Moira’s current set cases measure 280 × 175 × 65 mm (about 11.02 × 6.89 × 2.56 in). When using a case with another maker’s tiles, compare the internal layout as well as the exterior size. See our storage and travel guide for a complete packing routine.

How to Measure a Tile You Already Own

  1. Stand one tile upright. Measure the longer and shorter edges of the visible face.
  2. Turn it sideways. Measure the front-to-back thickness at the base.
  3. Use millimeters. Small differences are easier to compare accurately in metric units.
  4. Measure more than one tile. This helps distinguish normal production variation from a mistaken reading.
  5. Check the accessories. Measure the rack ledge, tray, and case compartment you intend to use.

Tile Size Checklist Before You Buy

  • I know the face height, face width, and thickness.
  • I checked readable face photos, not only lifestyle images.
  • I estimated the width of a full 14-tile hand.
  • I compared the tiles with any racks I already own.
  • I confirmed that the case fits the exact tile count and dimensions.
  • I checked which accessories and annual card are included or excluded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard American Mahjong tile size?

There is no single universal retail size. Manufacturers use different face proportions and thicknesses, so compare the exact measurements shown on each product page.

Are larger Mahjong tiles easier to read?

A larger face can provide more room for symbols and indices, but contrast, type size, artwork, and glare can matter just as much. Inspect actual face photographs before deciding.

Will any American Mahjong tile fit any rack?

Not necessarily. Rack channels, ledges, and lengths differ. Compare tile thickness and height with the rack’s usable dimensions, especially when mixing brands.

Do thicker tiles stand without racks?

Thickness can help stability, but base shape, height, material, and surface level also matter. Do not assume that every tile of a certain depth will stand equally well.

Does a 160-tile set use all 160 tiles in every game?

No. A common NMJL-style playing inventory uses 152 tiles. A 160-tile retail set can include additional Jokers, blanks, Flowers, or spares; the exact extras vary by maker. Identify the inventory before building the walls.
