American Mahjong Set vs. Tiles Only: What Should You Buy?

“American Mahjong set” can mean different things from one store to another. Sometimes it describes the tiles and their case; elsewhere it means a table-ready bundle with racks, pushers, a mat, and accessories. Comparing the contents line by line is more reliable than comparing the product names.

The short answer

Buy tiles only—or a tile-centered set—when you already own compatible racks and table accessories, prefer to choose each component separately, or want a smaller starting purchase. Choose a broader bundle when you need to equip a table from scratch and the included pieces match your preferred size and style.

What a playable tile collection needs

American Mahjong uses Dots, Bams, Craks, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers. Many retail sets include spare or decorative tiles in addition to the tiles used during play. Moira’s current sets contain 160 tiles; 152 are used in standard play, with eight extras included. The current annual playing card is separate because the card changes by year.

What may not be included

Racks hold each player’s hand, and pushers help move the walls. A mat is optional but useful for sound, surface protection, and defining the play area. Dice, bettor markers, score accessories, and carrying cases vary by product. Never assume they are included unless they appear in the product description.

Choose tiles first when…

  • You already play with a group that supplies racks and a mat.
  • You are replacing worn or hard-to-read tiles.
  • You want to mix your own colors and materials.
  • You need a portable set and fewer bulky accessories.

Choose a broader bundle when…

  • You are hosting a new group at home.
  • You want coordinated pieces in one purchase.
  • You have checked that every included item will be used.
  • You know the racks fit the stated tile dimensions.

Compare value, not just item count

A bundle is only good value if the pieces are durable and useful to you. Compare material, legibility, tile dimensions, storage, replacement support, and the exact return policy. Four accessories you will not use do not make a better purchase than one well-made set of tiles.
